Valuing the Single Domain: A Seller’s Guide
While many in this industry debate about the entry of fortune 500 level corporate buyers into the domain industry, the question the individual domainer might ask themselves is “will they be ready?” The process of selling a domain name to a buyer outside of the domain name community will be made easier with the investment of a few hours in collecting and organizing data relevant to that domain name.  This article will walk the domainer through a few of these steps, while providing the means for assessing the value of a single domain name as well.  Rather than replace the work of the brokers, bankers and auctioneers in the industry, I think readers of this article may gain insight into just how complicated it can be to sell a domain with a seven figure price tag.

Domainers should be aware that separating their portfolios into separate pieces to be sold off over time will frequently result in a valuation that exceeds what a buyer may receive when selling the entire portfolio in one shot.  There are many reasons for this, but usually it boils down to the fact that some buyers are more interested in the branding value of certain domains while other buyers only care about the amount of revenue generated by the traffic.
